PacificLight Power is set to develop a USD 1 billion hydrogen-compatible natural gas power plant on Jurong Island in Singapore, slated to begin operations by 2029. With a capacity of at least 600 MW, this plant will be the largest and most efficient combined-cycle gas turbine facility in the country, generating enough power for over 864,000 four-room flats annually. A key feature of the new plant is its ability to burn at least 30% hydrogen—a cleaner fuel—blended with natural gas. This is a significant step toward achieving Singapore’s ambitious net-zero carbon emissions goals. In the future, the plant is set to be capable of operating entirely on hydrogen.
The plant will also feature the country’s first large-scale battery energy storage system, storing excess electricity during low-demand periods. This move aligns with Singapore’s goal to have nine hydrogen-ready power plants by 2030, with PacificLight’s facility being the largest.
The Energy Market Authority (EMA) awarded the contract to PacificLight on January 3, 2024. This development forms part of Singapore’s push for greener energy sources, as the demand for electricity is expected to rise by 3.7% annually through 2030. PacificLight’s project follows other major initiatives, including YTL PowerSeraya’s hydrogen-compatible plant and Keppel’s Sakra Cogen Plant, which are all key players in the city-state’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.
