Plans to Build A Second Airport in Bali

August 2019

Indonesia plans to build a second airport in Bali located in the northern village of Kubutambahan, Buleleng Regency. The proposed international airport will cater to budget airlines such as Jetstar, Air Asia and Lion Air. Meanwhile, the current Ngurah Rai International Airport will be focused on servicing the full service airlines.

It is hoped the new airport will also assist in the development of tourism in the currently underdeveloped northern region of the island.

The construction is tentatively set to start in 2020 and will take up to three years to be completed. However, this might be delayed as the Indonesian government plans to get the supporting Infrastructure, such as the North-South toll road, ready before they finalize plans for the new airport. The development of toll road might face land acquisition issues.

The Indonesian Transport Minister has also brought forward the possibility of building Bali’s first railway to carry passengers from South to North for free.
