The Port Authority of Thailand (PAT) has announced plans to transform Bangkok’s Klongtoey Port into a modern smart hub covering approximately 375 hectares. The development will integrate smart city, smart port, and smart community initiatives.
This announcement follows a key legislative change, as the Cabinet approved amendments to the Port Authority Act of 1951 on January 2025. The updated law will allow PAT to expand its operations beyond traditional cargo services and form new subsidiaries for private-sector collaboration.
Instead of relocating the historic port, PAT will implement advanced technology to improve cargo transport efficiency while addressing traffic congestion and air pollution in Bangkok. The project designates approximately 174 hectares for smart city initiatives, 113 hectares for smart port operations, 19.7 hectares for smart community projects, and 16.5 hectares for land currently leased to PTT.
A key component of this transformation is the Bangkok Logistics Park, expected to lower national logistics costs by THB 1.4 billion (USD 41 million). The facility will incorporate modern traffic management solutions, including dedicated truck parking and a “Truck Q” system to reduce port congestion.
Plans also include a 10.8-hectare cruise terminal along the Chao Phraya River to support Thailand’s tourism sector. The port complex will introduce entertainment and commercial zones, with final details pending approval from the master plan committee.
The master plan is set to be completed within six months. The development will proceed through a combination of direct investment and public-private partnerships, ensuring a balance between modern logistics infrastructure and community benefits.
