Thailand’s Clean Energy Goals Attract Solar Rooftop Players

June 2021

Thailand’s latest Power Development Plan states that the country aims to draw 35% of its energy from non-fossil fuels by 2037. One of the most promising clean segments is solar rooftop, where several foreign players are investing in key projects.
One of these is Singaporean Cleantech Solar, which in May 2021 commissioned a 1 MW solar PV rooftop project under a long-term purchase agreement (PPA) where the company will provide full turnkey financing, designing, installing, maintenance and operation of the PV system. The 1 MW solar PV system consists of more than 2,700 solar modules built across four warehouses that will produce over 1,300 MWh of electricity.
In a similar development, in June 2021 French multinational player TotalEnergies announced to have completed the construction of 24 facilities of solar-powered rooftops in Thailand for Betagro, one of the largest companies in the South East Asian nation. This represents one of the largest corporate solar portfolios in Thailand and will provide clean energy to Betagro through 20-year corporate power purchase agreements. It is calculated that 38 GWh of renewable electricity per year will be generated by the 25 megawatt-peak system, around 10% of the company’s total power consumption.
