Aiming to obtain a competitive advantage in the global electric vehicle (EV) market, Vinfast, Vietnam´s leading private automotive manufacturer, has formed several collaborations with developers of innovative battery technologies.
For instance, VinFast is working with Israel’s StoreDot, whose extreme fast charging (XFC) technology can charge a battery to 80% capacity in just 4-5 minutes. As part of this collaboration, Vinfast wants to gain access to the technology and potentially manufacture batteries itself. Instead of graphite, StoreDot uses nanoparticles in their batteries, which allows a much faster charging speed.
VinFast has also entered agreements with various battery manufacturers including Chinese company Gotion High-Tech and Taiwanese battery manufacturer ProLogium (PLG). Gotion High-Tech is producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries which have low cost and are suitable for mid-range electric cars. They are independent of raw materials like cobalt and nickel, and less energy-dense than nickel-based batteries. Meanwhile, PLG is developing solid-state batteries, which are believed to have a better energy density and reduced danger of explosion or fire than lithium-ion batteries. As a result, they are more expensive than LFP batteries.
Recently, Vingroup Vice Chairwoman Thuy Le stated that the company plans to construct battery production facilities in Europe and the United States, as well as a set up a facility in Vietnam.
