New 135,700 sqm Retail Complex Opened at Singapore Airport

April 2019

On 11 April, Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel) gave selected members of the public a sneak peek into a 135,000 sqm lifestyle destination at Changi Airport, developed by Jewel Changi Airport Trustee Pte. Ltd., a joint venture by Changi Airport Group and CapitaLand. Built on the site of the former Terminal 1 open air carpark, the complex is designed by renowned architect, Moshe Safdie, and features a distinctive dome-shaped façade on top of a 10 storey structure (five above ground and five basement storeys) housing attractions, unique shopping and dining concepts, as well as airport and accommodation facilities. Two key attractions are the HSBC Rain Vortex, a 40-metre tall indoor waterfall with water cascading through an oculus in the roof of the building, which is set to be the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, and Shiseido Forest Valley, a four-storey landscape, which houses one of the largest indoor collection of plants in Singapore.

Jewel contains over 280 units, with about 30% dedicated to F&B and the remaining space dedicated to retail. A quarter of the total leased units are flagship outlets, new-to-market brands (Emack & Bolio’s, JW360˚, Lavender, OYSHO and Pokémon Center Singapore) and new-concept stores (Bengawan Solo, Nike and Tiger Street Lab). The tenant mix also features well-established brands and anchor tenants, including a supermarket and a cinema. Retailing formats at Jewel include duplexes, outdoor terraces and spaces within the Canopy Park on the topmost level. From May 2019, the Changi Experience Studio on Level 4 will bring visitors on a journey of fun and discovery through the virtual world of Changi Airport with interactive games, projection experiences, immersive shows and gallery exhibits.

Early check-in counters and baggage storage facilities, open from 6am to midnight daily, allow travelers to have a worry-free experience while they shop, dine, relax and play to make the most of their time before flying out of Singapore. In line with the growth of Singapore as a regional cruise center, Jewel also has the Changi Lounge which provides seamless transfers for passengers with connections to cruise and ferry services. Jewel will also house the first YOTELAIR property in Asia. Rooms can be booked for a minimum of four hours in YOTELAIR’s 130 smartly-designed cabins that optimize space in its Premium, Accessible and Family cabins, these. This is ideal for short daytime layovers or overnight stays. YOTELAIR also features time-saving airline style self-check-in kiosks.

In conjunction with the development of Jewel, Changi Airport’s Terminal 1 has also been expanded to increase capacity by another three million passenger movements per year. This brings the airport’s total capacity to 85 million. Changi Airport is the world’s seventh busiest airport for international traffic, managing 65.6 million passenger movements and 2.15 million tons of airfreight throughput in 2018. Changi Airport has 400 retail and service stores, as well as 140 F&B outlets.
