The Smart Cities Sector – Key Trends in Malaysia

Why Buy This Report?

This report is designed to provide an overview of the smart cities sector in Malaysia.  By developing smart cities, Malaysia aims to be globally competitive not only from an economic standpoint, but also from environmental and social perspective standpoint. Among Malaysia’s key cities and regions that are being developed to act as test beds for smart technologies in the country are Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Cyberjaya, Iskandar, Penang and Subang.  The report explores various public and private initiatives in Malaysia to boost the smart city sector, for example:

  • The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and its applied research agency, MIMOS, launched the “National Internet of Things (IoT) Strategic Roadmap in 2015”, a plan that serves as a guideline for IoT implementation in Malaysia that will enable smart city initiatives in the country.

  • Telekom Malaysia, the country’s leading telco, has set up an Integrated Operations Centre in Iskandar Puteri, in the state of Johor, a first ever in Malaysia, which is to serve as a centralized command center for Internet of Things (IoT) operations for smart city services. The center is able to provide a single nationwide monitoring dashboard to coordinate operations of smart services involving physical devices and sensors, vehicles, buildings as well as incidents and events in any given location in the country.

Report Structure

The report starts with a country profile, which is then followed by a snapshot of the Smart Cities sector. Rather than attempting to cover the entire Smart Cities sector, the report focuses on four key sectors, namely Smart Building, Smart Water, Smart Transport and Smart Energy. Starting with the Smart Building Subsector, we identify smart solutions and initiatives that have been deployed in the country. Subsequent chapters adopt the same approach.
