WEF Launches Asia-Pacific Ocean Startups Hub in Singapore

June 2025

In April 2025, the World Economic Forum (WEF) launched the Asia-Pacific chapter of its 1000 Ocean Startups coalition in Singapore, aiming to bolster ocean-focused innovation across the region. This initiative seeks to accelerate the development of sustainable solutions addressing marine challenges such as pollution, overfishing, and biodiversity loss. By fostering a collaborative environment, the coalition intends to support start-ups that contribute to the regeneration of ocean health and the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14, which focuses on life below water.

The Asia-Pacific chapter will serve as a regional hub, connecting entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to facilitate the growth of ocean-impact ventures. Through this platform, start-ups will gain access to resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities necessary for scaling their solutions. The initiative highlights the importance of regional cooperation in addressing transboundary marine issues and promoting sustainable economic development within the blue economy.

Singapore’s strategic location and commitment to sustainability makes it an ideal launchpad for this regional effort. The country’s infrastructure and policy environment are expected to attract a diverse range of stakeholders, fostering innovation and collaboration. By anchoring the Asia-Pacific chapter in Singapore, the WEF aims to leverage the nation’s strengths to drive impactful change in ocean conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.

The establishment of the Asia-Pacific chapter of the 1000 Ocean Startups coalition represents a significant step towards mobilizing collective action for ocean sustainability. By empowering start-ups and facilitating cross-sector partnerships, the initiative aspires to create scalable solutions that address pressing marine challenges, ultimately contributing to the health and resilience of the world’s oceans.
