AkzoNobel, a Dutch multinational coatings company, has inaugurated a new research and development (R&D) facility in Nilai, located in the state of Negeri Sembilan. Designed to function as a regional innovation hub, the center will focus on delivering eco-friendly, high-performance decorative paint solutions tailored to the specific needs of Southeast Asian markets.
The Nilai facility becomes part of AkzoNobel’s global network of specialized R&D centers, which includes locations in Poland, Dubai, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. It is also integrated with the company’s wider network of approximately 70 R&D labs around the world. Outfitted with cutting-edge technology, including a fully automated robotic testing system, the center supports high-throughput experimentation and data-driven product development. Housing 35 research professionals, the co-location of business and R&D functions is expected to accelerate innovation and improve responsiveness to local consumer needs.
Sustainability is central to the design and operation of the new center, which incorporates energy-efficient systems and environmentally responsible materials. The investment is a strategic step by AkzoNobel to strengthen its presence in key emerging markets, ensuring quicker delivery of market-relevant innovations while aligning with the company’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) objectives. This move highlights the company’s long-term commitment to advancing innovation, sustainability, and regional growth.
