Canadian–Indonesian Partnership to Launch Smart Water Metering Pilot in Jambi City

August 2025

Perumdam Tirta Mayang Kota Jambi, the municipal water utility for Jambi City, and professional services firm GHD have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to launch a joint pilot project that will enhance the city’s water data management through the deployment of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI 2.0).

The initiative forms part of a broader government-to-government collaboration between Canada and Indonesia, with support from the Canadian Embassy in Indonesia and the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), the federal agency that facilitates international government contracts for Canadian companies.

Perumdam Tirta Mayang currently uses manual water meter readings. Still, a proposed project aims to transition to digital smart meters that transmit real-time data over a secure network, potentially upgrading more than 100,000 meters citywide to enhance utility operations, customer service, and resource efficiency.

The Managing Director of Perumdam Tirta Mayang said that Jambi City needs a major breakthrough in tackling water management challenges, including reducing water loss, promoting conservation, and advancing toward a more sustainable and efficient future, adding that a pilot project with Canadian partners presents a promising opportunity to modernize business processes, boost efficiency, lower costs, and improve customer service.

GHD, in collaboration with the local utility, will assess Jambi City’s current system and evaluate suitable technologies, including various smart meter options, communication systems, and their integration with the existing billing infrastructure.
