Italian Energy Giant Explores Deeper Bioenergy and Carbon Capture Collaboration with Vietnam

August 2025

Italian energy major ENI is seeking to expand its footprint in Vietnam through new partnerships in bioenergy and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), aligning with the nation’s strategy for a green and sustainable transition. The plan was discussed during a recent meeting in Milan between Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hoang Long and senior leaders of the San Donato – headquartered group.

Deputy Minister Long underlined that CCUS is a central component of Vietnam’s decarbonisation pathway, with the government actively shaping the legal framework and infrastructure to support its deployment. He stressed that ENI’s technical expertise and global experience could make the company a vital partner in introducing new business models, advancing technology transfer, and piloting projects in both CCUS and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

ENI executives reaffirmed their interest in Vietnam, noting the country’s clear commitment to clean energy development. They expressed particular focus on bioenergy opportunities that utilise agricultural and forestry by-products such as used cooking oil, cashew shell oil, and oil-bearing crops. According to the group, Vietnam could become a key hub in its global supply chain through the expansion of local processing and collection models.

The two sides reviewed opportunities for cooperation across energy transition initiatives, biofuel development, and CCUS, while also acknowledging ENI’s long-standing partnership with state-owned Petrovietnam in oil and gas exploration. Long highlighted ENI’s innovation in Vietnam, particularly the establishment of ENI Natural Energies Vietnam Co., Ltd. in 2024 to develop biofuel and carbon credit value chains.

Reaffirming Vietnam’s readiness to work closely with ENI, Long said the Ministry of Industry and Trade would continue to facilitate connections with domestic partners and agencies, paving the way for projects that strengthen Vietnam’s sustainable energy agenda while advancing ENI’s global decarbonisation strategy.
