Malaysia Emerges as Regional Hub for New Zealand Halal Products

August 2025

Malaysia is positioning itself as a strategic gateway for halal products from New Zealand to access the broader ASEAN market. New Zealand’s Biosecurity and Food Safety Minister highlighted Malaysia’s significance as a premium halal market, noting that New Zealand’s halal meat exports currently exceed NZD 60 million (USD 37 million) annually.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), which oversees Islamic affairs and halal certification, has accredited two Foreign Halal Certification Bodies (FHCBs) from New Zealand, the New Zealand Islamic Development Trust (NZIDT) and the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), authorizing them to certify products for export to Malaysia. In addition, Malaysia is facilitating approvals for several New Zealand halal meat facilities seeking first-time market entry.

Beyond trade, Universiti Kuala Lumpur and the University of Canterbury have formalized collaboration on academic and research initiatives, including student and staff exchange programs, reinforcing bilateral ties in both halal industry development and higher education. Malaysia has also invited New Zealand halal industry players to participate in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) 2025, scheduled for September in Kuala Lumpur. During the event, Malaysia is expected to announce the formation of the ASEAN Halal Council, aimed at harmonizing halal certification across ASEAN and neighboring countries. The halal economy, currently valued at USD 1.3 trillion, is projected to grow to USD 3.7 trillion by 2030 and USD 5 trillion by 2050, with Malaysia targeting a 5% share, strengthening its position as a global halal hub.
