HMI Medical Group has become the first private healthcare provider in ASEAN to implement Japan’s Hinotori Robotic-Assisted Surgery (RAS) system at its flagship hospitals, Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor Bahru and Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka, on September 22-23, 2025. Developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Sysmex Corporation, the Hinotori system enhances surgical precision with robotic arms and a 3D camera, enabling minimally invasive procedures in urology, gynecology, colorectal, and general surgery. Approved by regulatory bodies in Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia, it supports faster recovery and reduced scarring, setting new standards for advanced care in the region.
The initiative strengthens Malaysia’s position as a healthcare hub, particularly in Johor and Melaka, aligning with the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Industry Blueprint 2021-2025 and Johor’s Special Economic Zone ambitions. Over 11,000 RAS procedures have been performed, with HMI’s trained surgical teams driving demand in specialties like prostate and women’s health. Johor’s Health and Environment Committee Chairman, YB Ling Tian Soon, and Melaka’s Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Utama Ab Rauf Bin Yusoh, highlighted its role in boosting medical tourism and addressing healthcare capacity constraints.
HMI’s launch of Malaysia’s first Next-Gen Smart Ward at MMC, integrating (Internet of Things) IoT and real-time monitoring, complements its digital healthcare focus. The partnership with Sysmex and Medicaroid Corporation supports Malaysia’s USD 27.75 billion medical tourism market (20.29% CAGR by 2032). By combining technology and training, HMI is positioning Malaysia as a leader in ASEAN’s precision healthcare, enhancing patient outcomes and regional competitiveness.
