The Philippines and Sweden have agreed to strengthen cooperation on sustainable mining and the development of critical minerals needed for the global clean energy transition. In a recent meeting in Quezon City, Environment Secretary Raphael Lotilla and Swedish Ambassador Anna Ferry discussed aligning the Philippines’ mineral development strategy with Sweden’s expertise in responsible, low-carbon mining technologies.
The dialogue explored opportunities for technology transfer, research collaboration, and capacity building, with a focus on improving environmental and social standards in mining operations, advancing critical mineral development, and promoting circular economy practices to reduce waste and enhance resource efficiency.
Sweden remains a significant strategic partner, producing nearly 90 percent of the European Union’s iron ore and serving as a global benchmark for green mining practices. For the Philippines, mining continues to be a meaningful contributor to the economy, with the industry posting PHP 50.1 billion in gross value added in the first half of 2025 and mineral exports reaching about USD 4.96 billion, or nearly 9 percent of total exports.
The strengthened partnership is expected to support the Philippines’ efforts to modernize its mineral sector and position itself more competitively in the global clean energy value chain.
