Saudi-listed energy company ACWA Power announced that its renewable ammonia project in Indonesia is expected to begin commercial operations this year. The project, known as the Garuda Green Hydrogen Project, is being developed in partnership with state-owned utility PT PLN and fertilizer producer PT Pupuk Indonesia. The initiative supports Indonesia’s efforts to expand green hydrogen production at scale.
The facility will be powered by a hybrid system combining solar and wind energy with a total capacity of 600 megawatts. It is expected to produce up to 150,000 tons of green ammonia per year. The project has an estimated investment value of USD 1 billion.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo stated that green hydrogen is an important component of Indonesia’s decarbonization strategy. ACWA Power Chief Executive Officer Marco Arcelli said the company aims to support Indonesia’s clean energy development through long-term cooperation with state-linked entities.
The project aligns with Indonesia’s broader renewable energy plans and follows international discussions under the G20 framework that reaffirmed commitments to the Paris Agreement. As the project moves toward full-scale operations in 2026, it is expected to contribute to Indonesia’s participation in the regional market for green hydrogen derivatives in Southeast Asia.
