New Zealand and Vietnam Strengthen Agricultural Trade Ties

March 2026

Rising demand for premium food products is creating new opportunities for New Zealand exporters in Vietnam, with fresh fruit leading the way and broader cooperation on the horizon.

New Zealand’s competitiveness in agricultural trade is built on three pillars: favorable natural growing conditions, strong quality standards, and efficient logistics. Cherries from Central Otago serve as a prime example. The region’s clean air, fertile soils, abundant sunlight, and distinctive climate allow fruit to develop exceptional size, firmness, and flavor. Because cherries are air-freighted to Vietnam and arrive within 48 hours of harvest, exporters can pick fruit at peak maturity rather than shipping early, resulting in a fresher, higher-value product at the retail level.

Vietnam is an increasingly strategic market for New Zealand. With a large population and a rapidly growing middle class, it offers both scale and long-term potential. New Zealand’s own population of just five million produces enough food to feed roughly 50 million people, making export markets essential to its agricultural economy. As Vietnamese consumers grow more health-conscious and attentive to food safety and nutritional value, demand for premium imported products continues to climb.

Beyond cherries, apples, and kiwifruit, which are already well established, growing interest in persimmons and strawberries signals room to expand. New Zealand authorities are actively working with Vietnamese counterparts on market access for additional products.

Cooperation extends beyond trade in goods. New Zealand brings expertise in agricultural technology, biosecurity, cold-chain logistics, and post-harvest handling. A practical example is dragon fruit: collaboration between the two countries has improved quality and enabled Vietnamese producers to export higher-value products. Officials on both sides describe the overall trade outlook as positive and increasingly balanced.
