Indonesia Accelerates National Hydrogen Development Strategy

March 2026

Indonesia is accelerating the development of a national hydrogen ecosystem as part of its clean energy transition. The initiative supports decarbonization, energy security, and long-term industrial growth under President Prabowo Subianto. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources stated that the effort follows the National Hydrogen Strategy and the National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap, which guide hydrogen related development in the country.

According to the Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Eniya Listiani Dewi, hydrogen development will support several sectors including industry, transportation, electricity generation, and export-oriented activities. She stated that the government aims to ensure green hydrogen becomes available in the domestic market at about 200 tons per year during the initial stage.

Implementation will be conducted in phases to support regulatory preparation, infrastructure development, and market demand growth. The first phase, referred to as the initiation stage, will run from 2025 to 2034. It will be followed by a development and integration phase from 2035 to 2045. A final acceleration and sustainability phase is planned for the period from 2045 to 2060.

Indonesia is also strengthening cooperation with Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The partnership combines Japanese technology, project experience, and financing with Indonesia’s renewable energy potential and projected long term demand.

Officials stated that the bilateral hydrogen and ammonia roadmap aims to promote industrial collaboration and encourage the development of viable hydrogen infrastructure through coordinated policy support and financing mechanisms.
