ABB, a global company in electrification and automation, was awarded a contract by South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean to supply a complete electric power and propulsion system for Singapore’s first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), a pivotal addition to the city-state’s energy infrastructure. The FSRU, with a 200,000 cubic meter LNG capacity, will be delivered to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in 2027 and moored at Jurong Port by 2030 under a long-term charter with Singapore LNG Corporation. The system includes a medium voltage generator, 6.6kV switchboards, propulsion components, and advanced digital solutions like remote control, diagnostics, and enhanced power protection, reinforcing ABB’s long-standing collaboration with Hanwha Ocean, a leading builder of 23.4% of the global gas fleet.
This FSRU, capable of processing five million tons of LNG annually, will boost Singapore’s LNG import capacity by 50% compared to its existing landside terminal in Jurong, supporting the nation’s energy transition toward net-zero emissions. The project aligns with Singapore’s strategic investment in flexible, sustainable energy infrastructure, addressing Asia-Pacific’s dominant two-thirds share of global LNG demand in 2024, as noted by Wood Mackenzie. The facility’s advanced technologies, including ABB’s automation and digitalization systems, enhance operational efficiency and reliability, positioning Singapore as a key LNG hub in Asia.
The initiative reiterates Singapore’s commitment to balancing energy security with economic and environmental goals, leveraging its role as a regional energy leader. ABB’s integrated solutions will ensure high performance and sustainability for the FSRU, which is critical for meeting rising energy demands driven by consumer electronics, electric vehicles, and industrial growth.
