Biggest Local Train and Bus Depot Set to Open in 2026

January 2025

Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has opened a tender for the operation of 27 bus routes under the Tampines bus package, set to commence in July 2026. This initiative emphasizes the importance of electric bus operations, as the LTA aims to enhance the electrification of its public bus fleet. The current operator, SBS Transit, has managed this package since 2016, but its contract is nearing expiration. The new package will not only include existing trunk routes but also a new service launching in 2025 as part of the Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme, all supported by the upcoming East Coast Integrated Depot.

The East Coast Integrated Depot is poised to be a landmark addition to Singapore’s public transport infrastructure. Scheduled to open in 2026, this facility will feature a multi-storey bus depot capable of accommodating over 500 buses and charging more than 200 electric buses. Additionally, it will house train depots serving three rail lines, showcasing Singapore’s commitment to modernizing its public transport system. The LTA has set ambitious goals, aiming for half of the public bus fleet to be electric by 2030, with ongoing investments in charging infrastructure and electric vehicle technology.

As part of its strategic focus on sustainability and efficiency, the LTA is evaluating bidders not just on traditional operational metrics but also on its plans for integrating electric buses into its fleets. This shift reflects a broader trend towards cleaner energy solutions in public transport, aligning with Singapore’s vision for a sustainable urban environment. With these developments, Singapore is not only enhancing its public transport capabilities but also setting a precedent for future innovations in the sector.
