DOE Endorses 40 Power Projects for Grid Integration, Majority from Renewable Energy

June 2025

The Department of Energy (DOE) has endorsed 40 power projects for system impact studies (SIS) with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) since January 2025, signaling continued momentum in the country’s energy transition efforts. Of these, 30 are renewable energy (RE) projects, with the remainder comprising eight energy storage systems and two conventional power facilities.

The SIS, conducted by NGCP, evaluates the capacity of the national grid to accommodate new generation assets and outlines the necessary upgrades, such as transmission lines and substations, to maintain grid reliability.

In April alone, the DOE approved five new RE projects with a combined capacity of 520.1 megawatts (MW). These include:

  • PAVI Green Camsur Renewable Energy Inc. – 50.1-MW solar farm in Camarines Sur
  • Energy Development Corporation – 30-MW geothermal project in Sorsogon
  • Amihan Power Inc. – 80-MW wind project in Camarines Sur
  • Freya Renewables Inc. – 160-MW wind facility in Negros Occidental
  • JBD Water Power Inc. – 200-MW wind farm across Abra and Kalinga

These developments support the Philippine government’s renewable energy roadmap, which aims to increase RE’s share in the power generation mix to 35% by 2030 and 50% by 2040. Currently, renewables account for around 22% of the country’s energy output.

The DOE projects that over 11,600 MW of committed RE capacity will be online by 2030. This includes:

  • Solar – 8,431.19 MW
  • Wind – 2,233.24 MW
  • Hydropower – 836.38 MW
  • Geothermal – 74.22 MW
  • Biomass – 50.28 MW

These figures underscore the growing role of renewables and storage systems in addressing the Philippines’ long-term energy security and sustainability objectives.
