Hateco Group and APM Terminals (a part of A.P Moller Maersk) have officially inaugurated the Hateco Haiphong International Container Terminal (HHIT), marking a major milestone in the expansion of Vietnam’s maritime and logistics capabilities. The grand opening ceremony took place in Haiphong over the weekend, celebrating the completion of two deep-water berths at Lach Huyen Port. The facility is designed to accommodate mega vessels of up to 18,000 TEU, reinforcing Northern Vietnam’s position as a growing hub for international trade.
APM Terminals emphasized the significance of the project in advancing both efficiency and sustainability in the region’s logistics sector. Chairman Robert Mærsk Uggla highlighted that the terminal would not only connect Vietnam more seamlessly to global shipping routes but also generate jobs, create new opportunities for businesses, and support greener operations. As part of the partnership, APM Terminals contributed expertise in port automation, artificial intelligence, safety practices, and decarbonization strategies. HHIT has also been integrated into the Gemini Cooperation, the new East-West shipping network operated by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
For Hateco Group, the project represents a transformative achievement. Chairman Tran Van Ky described the terminal as a “gateway for progress” and a symbol of what innovation and collaboration can deliver. He credited the Vietnamese government’s support and the technical expertise of Maersk and APM Terminals for enabling the facility to be built and launched in just 30 months.
The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Hateco and APM Terminals to deepen cooperation in port operations and explore new logistics investment opportunities in Vietnam. Deputy Prime Minister Mai Van Chinh and Danish Ambassador Nicolai Prytz attended the ceremony, praising the project as a strong example of international partnership that will boost economic growth and strengthen ties between Vietnam and Europe.
