Indonesia’s state-owned defense company Pindad has partnered with German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to advance ammunition technologies. According to the Indonesian Defense Minister, the collaboration will focus on developing ammunition production capabilities and enhancing the country’s defense industry capacity. While specific technical details have not been disclosed, the partnership is expected to involve knowledge transfer and support for Pindad’s manufacturing infrastructure.
The Minister also highlighted Indonesia’s notable homegrown defense achievements, including Pindad’s tactical vehicles and small arms, Dirgantara Indonesia’s domestically developed N-219 transport aircraft, and the nation’s indigenous landing platform dock warship. He emphasized that the agreement marks a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral defense cooperation and advancing Indonesia’s goal of establishing a self-reliant defense industry with international competitiveness.
The partnership with Rheinmetall comes as part of Indonesia’s broader push to strengthen defense collaboration with international partners. Earlier in 2025, Jakarta selected France’s Dassault Aviation to supply Rafale fighter jets. Meanwhile, state-owned defense manufacturer Pindad has pursued multiple technology-sharing initiatives, including joint projects with Turkey’s FNSS on the Kaplan medium tank and collaborations with South Korean and Indian firms on ammunition and vehicle systems.
PAL Indonesia is steadily expanding its naval capabilities through joint shipbuilding initiatives with Dutch and Japanese partners, aligning with the country’s Defense Industry Policy to boost self-reliance while leveraging advanced global technologies.
