Indonesia Plans Ten New Medicine-Focused Universities with UK Collaboration

February 2026

President Prabowo Subianto announced a plan to establish 10 new universities in Indonesia, focusing on medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and science and technology. The initiative aims to address the national shortage of healthcare professionals.

Speaking after the United Kingdom Indonesia Education Roundtable in London, he stated that Indonesia currently produces about 9,000 doctors per year. He noted that reaching the target of 140,000 doctors remains a challenge, particularly as existing doctors retire over time.

The president said the government is seeking cooperation with leading universities in the United Kingdom to support the development of the new institutions. He added that some United Kingdom universities have previously collaborated with the University of Indonesia and Gadjah Mada University, and that several have established campuses in Indonesia.

According to the president, the planned universities will adopt United Kingdom academic standards. He stated that the institutions will provide education aligned with international benchmarks. The government plans to offer full scholarships to top graduates and to recruit foreign lecturers and professors.

Enrollment is expected to begin in 2028. The government also plans to develop a designated area for the universities and to ensure adequate living conditions and security to attract international faculty members.
