Indonesian Government Advances Green Agenda with 50 MW Solar Power Plant for New Capital

February 2024

The Indonesian government is advancing its goal of creating an environmentally friendly National Capital City (IKN) by prioritizing sustainable practices, including the installation of a significant 50-megawatt (MW) Solar Power Plant (PLTS). The planned solar facility, scheduled to be built on a 100-hectare site in the Sepaku District of North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, is anticipated to supply 10% of the electricity needs for IKN Nusantara, marking a substantial advancement towards creating a more environmentally friendly urban center.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Minister revealed significant project milestones, outlining the achievements within the sector. Notably, the 10 MW Solar Power Plant has been scheduled for commercial operation in February 2024, followed by a 40 MW Solar Power Plant slated for operation in mid-2024.

The establishment of the 50 MW PLTS corresponds with the government’s larger initiative to strengthen new and renewable energy (EBT) resources within IKN Nusantara, aiming for 80% of the capital’s electricity demands to be fulfilled by EBT sources by 2045. In tandem with the PLTS construction, infrastructure development includes a substation to provide a consistent electricity supply throughout the plant’s installation process.

Alongside solar energy, the government has proposed integrating natural gas into IKN’s energy portfolio. The approval of the IKN Natural Gas Commercial Scheme, supported by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Pertamina Group, signifies a substantial advancement towards fostering a sustainable and diverse energy landscape for the new capital.
