State-owned railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is in talks with Polish companies to explore potential collaborations in developing electric trams, which KAI’s President Director described last month as a highly viable public transport solution offering significant opportunities for international cooperation.
The President Director stated that trams could be a viable development option. He highlighted the potential for collaboration, noting that cities such as Bandung, Surabaya, and Semarang would be well-suited for such systems.
The President Director noted that several railway components used in Indonesia are supplied by Medcom, a Warsaw-based transportation technology company, underscoring the strong potential for expanded cooperation between the Indonesian and Polish railway sectors.
The initiative follows a recent visit to KAI headquarters by representatives of Polish transport firms, accompanied by the Polish Ambassador to Indonesia and officials from the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH).
The President Director commended Polish companies for their achievements in advancing railway technology. At the same time, the head of the Foreign Trade Office of PAIH-Indonesia highlighted Poland’s past challenges with air pollution and its transformation through investments in the green economy and public transport, noting that the country now has one of Europe’s most advanced transit systems and will soon see a Polish railway firm launch hydrogen-powered trains.
