Japan’s leading anime merchandise retailer, Animate, is set to expand its footprint in Southeast Asia with the opening of its first permanent store in Malaysia, accompanied by the country’s first Animate Cafe. Scheduled to launch at Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) in Kuala Lumpur, the openings mark a strategic move to cater to the growing demand for officially licensed anime products and themed experiences in the Malaysian market.
The flagship store has begun operations on October 10, 2025, offering a wide range of CDs, Blu-rays, collectibles and character goods sourced directly from Japan. It follows the strong performance of a pop-up outlet opened in late 2024, which saw high footfalls and extended its run multiple times due to demand from local fans. Complementing the new retail outlet, the Animate Café which features a rotating lineup of collaboration themes. Its first showcase will highlight a major Japanese anime franchise, complete with themed décor, limited-edition merchandise, and collaboration menu items.
To support the launch, the company will introduce a membership program offering discounts and exclusive benefits. The original pop-up store at LaLaport BBCC will also be converted into a specialty “Only Shop” during opening month, featuring limited-time merchandise tied to the cafe’s inaugural theme. With a series of opening promotions planned across its outlets, Animate’s expansion is poised to strengthen the presence of Japanese pop culture retail in Malaysia and deepen engagement with the country’s rapidly growing anime fan community.
