Maxis Launches First Commercial Narrowband-IoT Service in Malaysia

May 2019

Maxis has launched Malaysia’s first commercial Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) service. Starting from April 2019, the company activated its NB-IoT network within key IoT market centers in selected areas, including Cyberjaya, Kuching, Penang, Johor, Putrajaya and KLCC. NB-IoT is a dedicated network for IoT technology which offers 5G-like capabilities for lower bandwidth applications.

With the launch, businesses will now have the ability to utilize industrial IoT applications to form new data streams and by connecting simple devices such as sensors, facilitate actionable insights. The technology boosts Big Data and advanced analytics to enable informed decisions in areas like potential cost savings, better efficiency and new business opportunities.

Connected to the launch, Maxis will offer NB-IoT solutions and champion the development of the local ecosystem of partners, developers and customers by offering global best practices. Using Vodafone’s market-leading platform, Maxis is able to offer market-proven technology for Malaysian businesses looking to implement NB-IoT services in their operations.

The NB-IoT is currently being piloted in multiple use cases, including smart metering and Environmental monitoring, which will improve efficiency and serve potential new business models. Other solutions in Maxis’ innovation lab include smart lighting and parking monitoring, which have potential to open up new avenues for actors active in areas such as government, state councils and Smart Cities.
