Nokia And ST Engineering to Deploy Railway Communications Network for Bangkok’s Orange Line

November 2025

Nokia has partnered with ST Engineering and First One Systems to implement an Internet Protocol/Multi-Protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) communications network for Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Company Limited (BEM). The system will serve the new 35.9-kilometer Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Orange Line, which will connect the eastern and western parts of Bangkok through both underground and elevated tracks. The project is scheduled for completion by 2030.

The deployment will establish a mission-critical Backbone Transmission Network (BTN) designed to support railway operations requiring high reliability and security. Nokia’s IP/MPLS solution will provide a high-capacity, low-latency transmission backbone capable of handling essential and non-essential railway applications such as closed-circuit television (CCTV), public announcements, passenger information displays, radio communication, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems.

The network will include two BTNs, 10G and 40G, to support voice, data, and video transmission between train stations and the Operations Control Center. Nokia’s technology portfolio for the project includes the Nokia 7250 Interconnect Router, Nokia 7210 Service Access System, and the Nokia Network Services Platform, which provides enhanced network visibility and streamlined management.

According to Nokia, the collaboration leverages its global experience in railway communication systems and ST Engineering’s expertise in system integration. The network aims to strengthen the safety, efficiency, and reliability of Bangkok’s Orange Line while supporting the city’s broader goals for modern and sustainable rail infrastructure.
