The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) is set to acquire 12 additional FA-50 Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) by 2025. The PHP 40 billion (USD 680 million) procurement aims to bolster the Philippine Air Force’s (PAF) air defense capabilities, especially amid ongoing maritime security challenges.
The new FA-50s are expected to be the latest Block 20 variant, adding to the PAF’s existing squadron of 12 FA-50PHs, which are also scheduled for upgrades with a PHP 5.612 billion (USD 96 million) budget. Enhancements may include the integration of Lockheed Martin’s Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATP), a 300-gallon centerline fuel tank for extended range, and laser-guided bombs such as the GBU-12 and GBU-49. The upgrades will also include enhancements to ELTA EL/M-2032 radar for beyond-visual range (BVR) missile capability.
Other planned defense procurements include surface-to-air missiles for the upcoming Miguel Malvar-class frigates, a Bell 412EPX aeromedical helicopter, cyber defense systems, and communications equipment for the Philippine Navy. The PAF also signed a contract with Embraer in December 2024 for six additional A-29B Super Tucano light attack aircraft, set for delivery by 2026. These acquisitions aim to modernize the country’s defense systems, enhance aerial capabilities, and replace aging aircraft, ensuring improved national security in the coming years.
