PT PJBI and Masdar Agree on Indonesia’s First Floating PV Project

January 2021

PT PJBI, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state electricity company PT PLN (Persero) and Masdar, one of the world’s leading renewable energy companies, have established a joint venture to drive Indonesia’s first floating PV project, the Cirata Floating Photovoltaic Power Plant.
The 145MW project is scheduled to start construction in the first half of 2021. The power plant, located on a 250-hectare plot, will provide electricity to 50,000 homes, offset 214,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and contribute to the creation of up to 800 jobs. The government is considering to develop an additional 60 floating PV plants, tapping into more than its 600 lakes and reservoirs, and helping to preserve land resources.
Under its Electricity Infrastructure Acceleration Program, Indonesia is targeting 23% of its energy mix to come from renewables sources by 2025. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the country could save as much as USD 51.7 billion yearly by scaling up renewables.
