According to media reports, Sony is closing a smartphone production plant in Beijing and shifting to Thailand. The unit has continually experienced losses over the last few quarters. A company spokesperson advised that Sony hopes to make the business profitable by 2020, by moving the production facility to Thailand which will help reduce operational expenses.
Sony representative added that the closure is not related to the current trade tensions between the U.S and China, in which the two economic giants have been waging a tariff war.
By shifting the production facility, the company hopes to shore up the unit and hold out until the arrival of 5G, in which Sony believes there will be a future for its handsets and mobile technology.
