South Korea Eyes Bigger Defense Deals with the Philippines

July 2025

South Korea is aiming to deepen its defense ties with the Philippines as part of its broader push to become the world’s fourth-largest arms exporter by 2027. At the recent International Maritime Defense Exhibition (Madex) 2025 in Busan, Korean defense firms highlighted new technologies in maritime security, with Philippine defense officials in attendance.

The Philippines is already a key customer for South Korea, with several major procurement deals in place. Manila is expected to sign a contract worth approximately PHP 40 billion (USD 690 million) for 12 FA-50 Block 70 light combat aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries. This would double the Philippine Air Force’s fleet of Korean-made jets.

HD Hyundai is also delivering two Malvar-class frigates under a PHP 28-billion (USD 483 million) contract, with the second vessel scheduled for delivery in September. In addition, the first of six offshore patrol vessels under a separate PHP 30-billion (USD 517 million) contract will be launched this June. The shipbuilder is eyeing a second frigate acquisition project valued at PHP 34 billion (USD 586 million), excluding ammunition.

Other Korean defense companies are also expanding their offers. LIG Nex1 is proposing new weapons systems, including Raybolt antitank guided missiles and air defense solutions like the Chiron and MSAM 2. Hanwha Systems, already involved in combat management systems for Philippine Navy warships, is pitching continued collaboration for system upgrades. Hanwha Land Systems is marketing its K9 howitzers, Chunmoo rocket systems, and amphibious assault vehicles to the Philippine Marine Corps.

Maritime tech firm Marineworks is also promoting its “smart ship solution” to enhance the Philippine Navy’s situational awareness and operational effectiveness.

South Korea views the Philippines not just as a customer, but as a long-term strategic defense partner.
