Thailand Aims to Become Electricity Hub of ASEAN

The Thai Energy Ministry has announced that the country plans to develop its power transmission lines to become the electricity hub of the region. In this context, Thailand wants to source hydropower from Laos and sell it to Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar.

Moreover, ASEAN Energy ministers are expected to facilitate affordable electricity by installing modern transmission lines in the region, as well as providing other sources of renewable Energy including solar, wind, natural gas and biomass power.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) revealed plans to develop a transmission network that can connect with neighboring countries in order to expand the regional grid connectivity and support the role of Thailand as the hub for ASEAN Power Grid. A multilateral power trade has been initiated between 3 countries; Lao PDR, Thailand and Malaysia. The trading amount will be further increased from 100 to 300 MW in the future.
