Thales Inks MoU with PT Len for Radar Collaboration in Indonesia

May 2019

Thales and PT Len have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on radar development for the Indonesian military. The MoU also extends the collaboration to include technology transfer and training for radar management and maintenance, an area that the Indonesian Ministry of Defense included among seven strategic projects.

Thales has been a close partner to the Indonesian military through the supply of air defense radars and air operations centers for the Indonesian Air Force. Outside of the defense sector, Thales has also supported Indonesia on advanced signaling systems for railway projects via a MOU signed in 2018 with PT Len, a state-owned company that specializes in the development of electronic equipment across various industries. Besides electronics for the defense industry, the company also offers radio transmitters, railway signaling systems and power electronic systems.

In addition to this project aiming to enhance, expand and strengthen national radar coverage, the other six strategic projects are: 1) Joint venture between Indonesia and South Korea to develop a next generation fighter jet; 2) Procurement of three new submarines from Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering with observation and participation by engineers from state-owned Indonesian ship builder, PT PAL; 3)  Development of the C-705 Anti-Ship Missile in collaboration with China, with PT DI acting as the lead integrator; 4)  Design, development and Manufacturing of the R-Han, 122mm rocket; 5) Establishment of domestic propellant factory by PT Dahana; and 6) Construction of a medium tank, where the lead integrator, Indonesian armaments and vehicle manufacturer PT Pindad is working with FNSS, a leading Turkish defense contractor.
