The UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) has introduced Q-Ward, Malaysia’s first fully operational smart ward equipped with advanced digital systems designed to enhance patient care and streamline hospital operations. Q-Ward, pioneered at the Berlian Ward in UMSC, leverages bedside technology providing real-time access to healthcare services while enabling patients to access entertainment and hospital services such as meal ordering, medical records, test results, and treatment plans from a single platform.
UMSC CEO Norzaiton Senusi highlighted that Q-Ward is modeled after the iWard system pioneered by Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London but further developed to meet local healthcare needs. The smart technologies implemented empower healthcare teams to anticipate and respond rapidly to patient needs while addressing global challenges such as nurse shortages by automating routine functions.
The innovation supports UMSC’s value-based care philosophy by improving patient engagement, facilitating informed decision-making, and ultimately aiming for better health outcomes. The AI-driven systems within Q-Ward are also designed to streamline routine surgical cases, enhancing hospital efficiency and patient experience. This integration of AI and digital technology marks a significant step forward in Malaysia’s healthcare service modernization.
