Vietnam Recognized as Global Agrifood Powerhouse by FAO

May 2025

Vietnam has emerged as a leading force in global food production, achieving self-sufficiency and becoming a major exporter, according to Máximo Torero, Chief Economist of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Speaking during the P4G Summit in Hanoi, Torero commended Vietnam’s leadership in transforming its agrifood systems.

A key initiative highlighted is the “Sustainable Development of One Million Hectares of High-Quality and Low-Emission Rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030.” This program aims to enhance sustainability and open new business opportunities through innovation and public-private partnerships.

Torero also acknowledged Vietnam’s active participation in South-South and Triangular Cooperation, particularly in water management and rice production. He emphasized the potential for Vietnam to expand its production capacities and access new markets by leveraging innovative agricultural practices and technologies, including through the Blue Transformation initiative.

During the meeting, FAO representatives reaffirmed their commitment to collaborating with Vietnam, referencing a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the FAO Director-General’s visit in February. Torero invited Vietnam to participate in the FAO Hand-in-Hand Initiative, encouraging contributions to joint projects under this cooperation framework.
