Vietnam Targets First Five Star Green International Airport with Gia Binh Project

January 2026

Vietnam is moving closer to developing its first five star green international airport following National Assembly approval of a major private aviation project valued at USD 7.4 billion. Gia Binh International Airport, to be developed by Masterise Group, is expected to become a flagship aviation hub and rank among the world’s top 10 airports once completed, marking the largest private airport investment in Vietnam to date.

Located in Bac Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, the airport will cover approximately 460,000 square metres by 2050. The complex will feature a VIP terminal of around 5,900 square metres, alongside technical infrastructure and support facilities designed to meet international aviation standards. Total investment is estimated at VND196.4 trillion, equivalent to USD 7.4 billion, funded through investor equity and legally mobilised capital.

The project will operate under a 70 year concession and be implemented in two phases. The first phase, scheduled for 2025 to 2030, will account for around USD 5.3 billion, with the second phase running from 2031 to 2050. Built to ICAO 4F standards, Gia Binh International Airport is designed to handle 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo annually by 2030. Capacity is projected to rise to 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo per year by mid century.

The developer aims to secure five star certification from Skytrax and achieve high passenger satisfaction scores under the Airports Council International Airport Service Quality programme. Operating under a twin hub model similar to those in London and Tokyo, Gia Binh is expected to complement Noi Bai International Airport, easing congestion while strengthening aviation capacity in the Hanoi capital region.

Beyond civil aviation, the project is seen as strategically important for national defence, security, and major diplomatic activities, including preparations for APEC 2027. Analysts also note its potential to accelerate development across the northern key economic zone, supporting growth in logistics, e commerce, tourism, and other high value services.
