Vietnam’s First Citywide IoT Network Activated in Ho Chi Minh City

September 2019

Vietnam’s largest telecom operator, Viettel, has installed and activated around 1,000 Narrow Band – Internet of Things (NB-IoT) broadcasting stations in Ho Chi Minh City, covering all 24 districts in the city. This makes the city the first one in Vietnam to be full covered by an IoT network.

NB-IoT is characterized by a focus on indoor coverage, low cost, long battery life, and high connection density. The lifespan of the terminals installed is expected to be around five years without changing batteries.

Viettel is also working on the development of a platform using NB-IoT technology-related services for its customers, which will enable services like smart parking, air quality monitoring, location tracking, and metering devices.

Viettel is targeting the complete coverage of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam next. It has installed and activated nearly 500 NB-IoT broadcasting stations in Cau Giay District and some suburban districts. Tao Duc Thang, the deputy general director of Viettel, said that the company plans to bring IoT technology to every province and city in the country.

In addition to IoT networks, Viettel is also conducting a 5G trial in Ho Chi Minh City, in collaboration with Nokia. It has set up 5G base stations in Ward 12 in the city’s District 10 and conducting a trial to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the band, coverage and application of 5G before commercialization in 2020.
