Vietnam’s Offshore Wind Industry Draws the Attention of European Investors

March 2023

Afry, a Swedish-Finnish supplier of engineering, design, and advisory services, has just closed a deal with Vietnam’ LIG-Huong Hoa 1 Joint Stock Company to become the owner’s engineer for the 48 MW Huong Hoa 1 onshore wind farm.

LIG-Huong Hoa 1 is a project company owned by B Grimm Renewable Power 1 Limited, a fully-owned subsidiary of Vietnam’s Truong Thanh Energy and Real Estate JSC and the private Thai power producer B Grimm Power Public Company. The new wind farm consists of eight wind turbines with a 6 MW capacity each, along with a new 220 kilovolt (kV) substation and a 5 km overhead transmission line to link it to the national grid. Afry’s task involves supporting project management, reviewing the design, and overseeing the project’s construction.

According to the World Bank Group, the Southeast Asian nation is viewed as a major player in the industry because of its strong winds in shallow waters close to coastal, densely inhabited areas. Industry insiders recently identified Danish turbine manufacturer Vestas as another potential investor in Vietnam’s renewable offshore wind sector. It has also been reported that many European companies are considering investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the country to build wind turbine plants.
