Apple Begins Production of M1 Mac Mini in Malaysia

February 2021

Apple has relocated its production facility from China and started to manufacture M1 Mac Mini in Malaysia.  This is part of the company’s bigger plan to decentralize its manufacturing operations, as the world’s tech industry is now looking for alternative locations for manufacturing or assembling plants apart from China.
The new M1 Mac Mini is not yet available for purchase in Malaysia as the local facility focuses specifically on export-based production. The facility is presumed to be located in Johor and owned by Foxconn Technology Malaysia, part of Hon Hai Precision Industry Company Ltd, the world’s largest design and manufacturing company for electronics and computing products. Among the existing Malaysian-made products are the processor and solid-state drive for Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.
Almost all Macs have been manufactured in China for many years – the Mac Pro is the only exception, assembled in the United States. However, due to the US-China trade war and global supply issues, Apple plans to build capacity in new locations (mainly within South East Asia) for multiple core products such as iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, AirPods, and others. For instance, Apple will be moving the manufacture of its MacBook line-up to Vietnam in the future.
