Dutch Firm Opens New Indoor Vertical Farm in Changi, Singapore

January 2025

Dutch agritech company Growy has successfully opened its new indoor vertical farm in Changi, Singapore, transitioning from a research and development phase to commercial operations. The facility spans 8,000 square meters and aims to achieve full production capacity of 500 tonnes of leafy greens per year by April or May 2025. Currently operating under the Chef’s Farm brand from Amsterdam, Growy supplies over 30 varied products, including herbs, microgreens, and baby leaves, to approximately 50 local hotels and restaurants.

Looking ahead, Growy plans to enter the retail market by December, with intentions to sell its produce in major supermarkets like FairPrice and Cold Storage. The farm features advanced automation and employs a unique approach by creating different climate zones for its crops, allowing for tailored growing conditions that enhance efficiency and reduce energy consumption. Despite challenges faced by other vertical farms in Singapore, Growy is optimistic about contributing to the nation’s food security goals, particularly the “30 by 30” initiative aimed at producing 30% of Singapore’s nutritional needs locally by 2030.

The opening of Growy’s facility comes at a time when local food production is increasingly critical. While some vertical farming ventures have struggled or closed, Growy’s innovative model and commitment to sustainability position it as a promising player in Singapore’s agri-tech landscape. Founder Ard van de Kreeke expressed confidence in the company’s ability to meet local demand for fresh produce while supporting Singapore’s vision for a resilient food ecosystem.
