JTC Appoints Consortium to Build Smart Grid in Punggol

January 2025

JTC Corporation, a government agency under Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry, has appointed a consortium comprising Univers, a global decarbonization software firm, and PacificLight Power, a Singapore-based power generator, to develop Singapore’s first district-level Smart Grid at the Punggol Digital District (PDD). This initiative is part of Singapore’s broader green energy transition and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. The Smart Grid will integrate a battery energy storage system (BESS) with solar photovoltaic panels to optimize energy efficiency through real-time data management and renewable energy generation, producing over 3,000 megawatt-hours of clean energy annually.

The Smart Grid is designed to enhance energy efficiency by enabling peak shaving—reducing energy consumption during peak demand—and allowing consumers to participate in demand response programs. This innovative setup will also facilitate the integration of non-traditional energy assets such as electric vehicles and backup generators, promoting active participation from businesses in managing distributed energy resources. The project, currently in the design phase, is expected to significantly improve district-level energy efficiency and serve as a living lab for testing new technologies and business models aimed at advancing sustainability goals.

Managed by Univers’ Energy and Environment Operating System (EnOS), the Smart Grid will provide secure and scalable solutions for monitoring and optimizing energy use across PDD. The collaboration between JTC, the Energy Market Authority (EMA), and the Public Sector Science & Technology Policy & Plans Office (S&TPPO) highlights Singapore’s commitment to leveraging digital technology for improved urban living and environmental sustainability. With this initiative, Singapore aims to set a benchmark for future industrial developments while driving innovation in the energy sector.
