In late August 2019, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee approved the construction of three new waste to Energy plants. Work is starting on the plants in September and October. The plants will use advanced technology to produce electricity from waste, and will have the capacity to process 50% of the city’s solid waste to generate power.
The plants will be located at existing waste treatment facilities in Cu Chi district, operated by Tam Sinh Nghia Investment Development Joint Stock Company, Vietstar Joint Stock Company and Tasco Joint Stock Company. The plans for the facilities are in line with the city’s aim to protect the Environment, reduce greenhouse emissions, control odors and leakage from waste and reduce the volume of buried waste to 20% in 2025 – currently the city buries 72.5% of the 9,000 tons of solid waste it produces daily.
Work has already began on the first, USD 400 million Vietstar plant at the Tay Bac solid waste treatment complex in CU Chi. Set to be completed in 2020, the facility will have a daily processing capacity of 2,000 tons of waste in its first phase of operation, which will doubled to 4,000 tons in the second phase by 2021. Work on the two other plants is scheduled to commence in October.
