Indonesia Could Become a Manufacturing Hub for COVID-19 Vaccine

October 2020

Indonesia could become a vaccine production hub for South East Asia in the near future, stated Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, after a meeting with Luhut Pandjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia. As part of a joint vaccine program between the two countries, China has agreed to work with Indonesia on vaccine research, production, and distribution.

According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 vaccines developed in China could be ready for public use by early November 2020. China currently has four COVID-19 vaccines in the final stage of clinical trials, with three already being used to inoculate essential workers since July 2020.

China has also committed that South East Asian countries will be among the first to receive COVID-19 vaccines once available. The Indonesian government also expects that Indonesian doctors and health workers will be able to take part in exchange and training programs in China.
