Japan to Export Defense Radar System to the Philippines

September 2020

The Philippine Department of National Defense (DND) formally signed a contract to purchase an air surveillance radar system from Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corp. (MEC).

The acquisition of the air surveillance radar system is part of the horizon 2 modernization program for the Philippine Air Force (PAF). The deal which costs PHP 5.5 billion (USD 103.5 million) is composed of four radars based on a system employed by the Self-Defense Forces (Japanese Armed Forces). The system can detect approaching missiles and aircrafts and is expected to improve the Philippines’ capability in surveillance and monitoring.

The radar systems will be strategically deployed in the areas of Philippines Rise, Southern part of the Philippines and on the southern portion of West Philippines Sea. According to the DND, the surveillance system will enable the PAF to provide optimal space monitoring, aircraft control, perform its air defense mission and enhance the security in the areas of interest identified by the DND.
