Leading IT Companies Roll Out Digital Learning Platforms in Malaysia

June 2020

Malaysia is witnessing global technology firms rolling out digital learning platforms to accelerate the digital economy and improve the education system amidst the challenges of COVID-19. Leading IT companies such as Huawei, Coursera, Apple, Google, and Microsoft are currently working closely with local government agencies to develop apps and services that can help train local digital talents as well as for teachers and students.

Huawei Malaysia has recently launched the ASEAN Academy, which aims to nurture and train 50,000 Malaysians for the country’s digital sector between 2020-2025. The company will invest MYR 3 million (USD 701,754) to provide more than 3,000 ICT courses involving 100 skilled trainers.

Meanwhile, Coursera is partnering with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) to upskill Malaysians as part of MDEC’s ‘Let’s Learn Digital’ campaign launched under the #mydigitalworkforce initiative. The unemployed workers in Malaysia will have unlimited access to 3,800 courses through the Coursera Workforce Recovery Initiative, which is available until 31 December 2020.

Google, Microsoft, and Apple have collaborated with The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE) for a digital learning platform called Digital Education Learning Initiative Malaysia (DELIMa) that is designed for teachers, students, and educators. The DELIMa platform offers relevant applications and services such as Google Classroom, Microsoft O365, and Apple Teacher Learning Centre. DELIMa currently has 1.7 million average monthly active users, consisting of 10,000 schools, 370,000 teachers, and 2.5 million students around the world.
