The Malaysian Army has ordered 800 M72 LAW-EC (Lightweight Anti-Tank Weapons) from Nammo, a joint venture between Norway and Finland. This procurement is part of Malaysia’s initiative to upgrade its anti-tank capabilities.
The M72 LAW-EC, chosen for this upgrade, features an effective range of 200 meters (656 feet) and weighs only 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds). These attributes make it ideal for operations in demanding environments, including urban areas and rugged terrains, and are well-suited for special forces missions. Although the contract’s total value has not been disclosed, each M72 EC unit is estimated to cost around USD 1,200.
Malaysia’s current arsenal includes the Carl Gustav 84mm, Instalaza C90, and Saab Bofors AT4, which will complement the new Nammo systems. With 35 countries already using the M72, the Malaysian Army will enhance its capability to engage light armored vehicles and fortified enemy positions. The new anti-tank weapons are set to replace the aging RPG-7 units currently used by the 10th Para Brigade. Additionally, Nammo’s M72 line includes variants such as the Anti-Armor and Anti-Structure Munition, currently utilized by the US military.
