UNDP Launches Malaysia Island Innovation Challenge to Tackle Waste Management

September 2024

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Malaysian Ministry of Finance, has launched the Malaysia Island Innovation Challenge to encourage collective local efforts in waste management across the country’s islands. This initiative aims to tackle pressing waste issues, including plastic waste, food waste, water pollution, and carbon emissions. By promoting innovative waste management solutions, the challenge seeks to localize sustainable tourism, improve the socio-economic conditions of local communities, and ensure environmental sustainability.

The challenge is open to all registered Malaysian stakeholders, such as government agencies, private companies, NGOs, community groups, and universities. Participants are encouraged to form partnerships with two or more local stakeholders, which may include collaborations, shared funding, or joint programs involving local governments, community associations, and NGOs. Successful applicants will be awarded grants of up to USD 40,000 to implement their waste management initiatives on Malaysian islands that receive tourists, along with technical assistance to support the development of their proposed projects. The application deadline is set for September 2, 2024, with up to five organizations eligible for funding.

Research conducted by the Ministry of Finance and UNDP indicates that plastic and food waste account for over 70% of the waste generated on Malaysia’s islands, primarily from resorts, food establishments, and local communities. Unsustainable waste management practices pose significant threats to the environment, local communities, and the tourism sector, leading to adverse environmental impacts, health risks, and the degradation of valuable tourism assets. Furthermore, waste collection surges more than tenfold during holiday seasons, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive engagement from the private sector, local governments, and communities in waste management efforts. The challenge aims to mitigate the detrimental effects of mass tourism while preserving the country’s tourism assets, which are vital to Malaysia’s economy and gross domestic product (GDP).
