Malaysian Water Agencies to Begin Water Reclamation Initiative in Malaysia

March 2021

Malaysian Water Agencies, Air Selangor in Selangor state, and Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK), a company under the Ministry of Finance have signed a partnership agreement on a sustainable water recycling project through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) named Central Water Reclamation Sdn Bhd. The equity in SPV will be split 60:40 between Air Selangor and IWK.
The agreement will permit the treated bio-effluent from IWK’s wastewater treatment plants to be transferred to Central Water’s treatment plant for further treatment. The Central Water’s treatment plant will then provide non-potable treated water for Air Selangor’s distribution to industrial consumers in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya for industrial processes and non-food crop agricultural applications.
IWK’s reclaimed water treatment plant is valued at about MYR 15 million (USD 3.6 million) and has the capacity to produce up to 7.5 liters of non-potable treated water per day (MLD). Central Water plants to start operations at the plant during the second quarter of 2021.
Both parties will also study two other opportunities involving IWK treatment plants at Pantai 2, Kuala Lumpur, and Section 23, Shah Alam to resolve the potable water issues as well as the opportunities for water operators to access alternative water sources for non-potable applications.
Interested parties may contact Air Selangor to discuss the suitability and feasibility of their locations and premises. This partnership is fundamentally linked to Malaysia’s long-term commitment to the sustainable growth of its water industry, and the national goal of recycling 33% of treated effluent by 2030 under the Green Technology Master Plan 2017-2030.
