NTT Announces Plans to Develop Largest Data Center in Indonesia

July 2019

NTT Com, the communications subsidiary of the Japanese ICT giant, NTT Group, will build a  four-story, 194,000 square feet data center campus near Jakarta. Dubbed the “Indonesia Jakarta 3 Data Center” (JKT3) the campus will have a 45 MW IT load and a 18,000 sqm IT space once completed. Expected to be finished by the end of 2020, this is the first project announced by NTT’s new subsidiary, NTT Global Data Centers, which focuses on data center construction, wholesale colocation and asset management in the APAC region, the EU and the US.

The data center campus will be located in a large industrial area around 30 km east of Jakarta, offering fully customized server rooms and co-location space by the rack, to meet the requirements of financial institutions and Over the Top (OTT) providers of digital content services such as video and audio.

The project comes at a time where demand for data center space in Indonesia is increasing rapidly, by more than 20% annually, due to data localization regulations. According to the “The 82nd Ordinance of the Year 2012 (Presidential Decree)” electronic system operators for “public services” must place their data center and disaster recovery center in Indonesian territory for the purpose of law enforcement, protection, and enforcement of national sovereignty to the data of its citizens. “Public services” could refer to government organizations and also public-facing private sector businesses, extending its coverage to banking, insurance, health, security, industrial services and social activities serving Indonesian customers or housing Indonesian data.
